Maryland Daily Runs iProduction Subscription Systems
By Steve Horton
iProduction
Baltimore, MD The Daily Record, Marylands only statewide daily newspaper covering business and legal news, has begun charging subscription fees for full access to the newspapers Web site located at mddailyrecord.com. Annual subscriptions to the site are $39. Web subscribers who also want to receive the print version of the newspaper receive a coupon for $39 off of the annual price of their next print renewal.
Christopher A. Eddings, publisher of The Daily Record, said subscribers are attracted by the sites in-depth business content. So far, were extremely pleased with response on our site, Eddings said. Were gaining an average of five paid subscriptions each business day. Eddings also said the number of site visitors, those who scan The Daily Records headlines but do not choose to pay for full access to the site, has been favorable. Web publishers generally prefer high numbers of site visitors because they help attract advertisers and because they often become paying subscribers in the future.
iProduction of St. Paul, Minnesota, provided The Daily Record with an Internet publishing system that processes subscribers payments and gives them access to subscriber-only areas of the site.
Stephen M. Laliberte, president of iProduction, said most Web publishers want to charge subscription fees, but not all can. The Daily Record is getting it done, Laliberte said. Theyre producing high-value Web content, day-in and day-out, that people are willing to pay for. Thats not an easy thing for a newspaper to do.
