John Kretzschmar, 28, a programmer at iProduction in St. Paul, Minnesota, completed 327 holes of disc golf in a single day to break the previous world record of 306 set in 2003 by two men from Fredericksburg, Virginia. Kretzschmar began to suffer leg cramps at around 10:00 a.m. and was forced to stop playing at about 8:30 p.m. when the pain became too intense to continue. Hansen Begg of Watertown, Minnesota, the other member of Kretzchmars twosome, went on to complete 380 holes and became the new world record holder.
The event was chronicled by the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Sunday, June 27, 2004:
St. Paul, MN Minnesotans are among the most dedicated golfers in the country. Industry experts rank this state second nationally in golfers per capita. Turns out the same can be said for disc golf, a game that is rapidly gaining popularity around the country and especially in the Twin Cities. Few disc golfers are as passionate about their sport as Alan Hansen Begg, who broke the world record for most different disc golf holes played in one day when he played 380 on Tuesday. Hansen Begg, 35, of Watertown, Minn., toured 31 courses from Shakopee to Sartell along with fellow disc golfer John Kretzschmar, 28, of Blaine.
Their goal was to break the record of 306, set last year in the Twin Cities by Steven Dodge and David Wold of Fredericksburg, Va., according to Disc Golf World News magazine. Like Hansen Begg, Kretzschmar broke Dodge and Wold's record. But his legs started to cramp about halfway through the pursuit and he completed 327 holes. Their journey started at 4:48 a.m. at the 18-hole Lions Park course in Shakopee and concluded at 9:36 p.m. at the 12-hole Mississippi River course in Sartell. Accompanying Hansen Begg and Kretzschmar were their wives, who served as driver and navigator, chiropractor Kevin Berg, acupuncturist Aaron Van Brunt and several others. "We started out in the van and in the end had a four-car convoy following us," Hansen Begg said.
