Editorial Drag and Drop Features of Advanced Content Management
Editors today have to accomplish more and more within the same amount of time. The digital transformation and Web-first publishing requires many more tasks, but old-fashioned print deadlines still wag the dog. Any efficiency that can be achieved in the digital workflow is a welcome relief.
One of IProduction’s foundational beliefs is that successful digital publishing starts with editorial excellence and quality content. A significant portion of our product roadmap is geared toward optimizing the editorial process to make it easier and faster to publish content in multiple digital formats and in email.
IProCMS recently added a major new feature that allows editors to drag and drop content and photos, increasing the efficiency with which they can place and arrange content on Web pages, photo albums and email messages.
Drag and Drop on Home and Landing Pages
The quality of the reader experience improves with each redesign. It is not uncommon to see home pages and landing pages that utilize different design templates depending on the nature of the news. IProCMS now supports management of multiple themes for a page. Each content container on a page is now interchangeable with multiple themes.
The following image presents an illustration. There is a content container for the home page that has several designs for the main “Hero” area on the page. In this example there are 5 different layouts for the container. Each layout presents a number of stories. In some layouts, a Hero design is used that contains a larger photo and alternative formats for supporting content. The new drag-and-drop feature allows an editor to select and drag an article object to remove it or change the position.
By selecting an alternative layout from the right side of the display, the entire layout changes. All of the selected content is placed in the new layout.
New content can be added by clicking on articles on the left side of the page and dragging them to the desired locations. New content can be dropped at the top or middle of the center content and article objects will be shifted down.
The “Filter Stories” tool on the upper left utilizes a power search engine to locate any content from the editorial database. The filter defaults to current content but can be used to find and place older content.
Photo Gallery Drag-and-Drop
Photos increase page views. People like to be written about. We regularly see spikes in traffic when event photos are promoted on a site. We are increasingly seeing new designs that use photo carrousels extensively. Photos perform best when they contain captions and contribute to a site’s SEO.
Managing photos can be a drain on editorial resources. Photos must be uploaded, sized, and annotated. Often they must be presented in a certain order. To help streamline this process, IProCMS includes a photo gallery drag-and-drop feature that simplifies uploading, annotating and ordering photos.
The new user interface adopts state-of-the-art best practices for managing photos.
To upload photo files, the editor simply drags them from the desktop to the drop area. The photos will be uploaded. They will also be automatically resized. Photos are uploaded using the large raw size. IProCMS is configured to automatically resize photos to the size or sizes used in the publication’s design.
Once the photos are loaded, they are easily annotated by entering credits and descriptions. If the order is not correct, the editor simply clicks on a photo object and drags it to the correct location.
